The Storm of the Burning Wind
The pieces were arrayed the wheel was set in motion. The clocks hand lumber towards the time of revalation. The Icarians fearing formidable resistance to thier plots attempted something unthinkable. Something beyond the means of thier failing resources. They were to sever the head of the lumbering Society of Daedalus and push them into a corner. Blind and unaware of thier plots the Society slept unknowingly, unprotected they slept. It is not known how the assassin gained entrance into the halls of Invictus and is a topic of much debate, but what is known is that the assissins blade rang true and found its mark. The flesh cut cleanly and deeply the taint of icarus marked the blade causing the wound to quickly inflame and let loose lifes blood. Arch Bishops Solidus's body lay sound till the next morn when a chamber maid came to clean his quarters. By the time the priests magics came to the Bishop's aid it was to late. The taint had pulled his soul beyond the realm of death and into the Twisting Nether.
The Icarians were needless to say stunned by thier victory. The ploy had worked and now the Society was in disarray. The council reeled at this but decided quick desicive action was required. A hero born among men rose to thier minds. A man of true valor, courage and wisdom. A man not a priest. Able to make quick decsisions and act on them. A man with whom the Society could go to war. The office of the High Templar was formed and the Paladin Xavier was nominated the man to fill that position. His changes were quick and sweeping. He opened the doors of the Society and let many in who could fight. A call went out for heros and in they came. His war was going to be fought fast and hard. Never had the society struggled so overtly with thier hated foe and now they knew it was time to approach them head on.
Through coertion and manipulation the Icarins had formed a Brotherhood thousands strong. A menagerie of magical persons struggling to prove thier worth to Icarus. They would soon get thier chance. Tapping the magics his father had developed and he had perfected and passed on to his chosen. The Brotherhood opened a portal to the twisting neather above the crater where Icarus fell. The blackest rip in the sky bore to it a mighty Arch Demon, Xanegrevius, who fed upon the same people who called him to this world. The will of the beast was entwined now with that of the Brotherhood and his payment was a ripe selection of arcane imbued bodies. The demon harnessed the winds and wrought great damage across the lands. The skies were ablaze with the burning sands of the steppes. The surrounding areas were cleared out as the fog of wind and debris made it impossible for people to breathe.
Their plan had worked the demon was summoned and now they would rule the world. But even after all thier gains they could not begin to imagine the changes that forever shook the Society. An army the likes of which has not been seen in many years set out from the halls of invictus and lordearon to meet this foe. The pieces began thier march to the great cataclysm. The armies clashed for what seemed like centuries the noble priests and paladins fighting the lesser demons and warlocks no ground being gained none being lost. Xavier realizing that his templars grew tired and weary needed to be done with this fight and needed to banish the taint for good. He sent riders into sights of great power searching for an obscure tome. How the knowledge of this tome came to him is one of great debate. Most say it came in a dream given to him by Daedalus himself. Others believe that another orginization acting independantly offered it to him, the price though is not know. With in the halls of Uldaman deep in a forgotten hall where the titans once dwelled sat a tome of great import. The tome of exorcism explained how to shape the light's will to rebuke the undead and demons of the land. With much preperation and prayer he set out to meet the beast. At the lip of the pit of taint he met the demon. Fortified with the tome and prayers he spoke the words of power invokinig the power of the light and calling out to his patron Daedalus. At this time the beats howl of pain shook the heart of even the bravest heart of the man on the field and all paused to take note of the events unfoldign before them. His chanting complete Xavier gained a cool look to his eye as he stared down the beast.
His lips parted once more and said in a booming voice of a man many times his size "BE GONE DEMON FOR I KNOW YOUR NAME!"
A wind raged around the field pulling at first small rocks and sand into the portal then stones and boulders. Then the tents and fortifications of the armies. Then the armies them selves men were sucked into the swirl of magic all the while the stare lingered on between Xavier and the demon. His eyes strained against the torrent of debris that flashed about him but he held his stare.
"XANEGREVIUS!" The word didnt seem to shake the demon but he bagan to stretch and pull.
His body became semi-corporeal and stretched toward the blackened gate but a smirk crossed his face as a the demons last card was played. A blade of great evil flashed out from his hands thrown towards Xavier who could not react fast enough in the winds. It sunk deep into his flesh. The blade, imbued with the taint, wounded him mortally. While the Society had its victory it came at heavy cost. The Icarians were in full retreat but with out a leader and dead to tend to, the Society could not follow. And so they gathered what they could and limped back to the Halls of Invictus, victorious.
This would be a turning point for both orders. The Brotherhood has never since tried to call a greater demon to serve them and the Society has only called upon the role of Templar on 2 other occasions in it's long history.
